Reduction of hydrodynamic losses with an Energy Saving Device (ESD) and Energy Saving with an optimized rudder design

Abstract

The paper includes an overview over the hydrodynamic driven Energy Saving Devices which are available on the market. The different solutions can be categorized in three different classes. One solution is concentrating on the improvement of the wakefield, the other category is revising the vortex losses and the third enhancement is a result of a pre swirl to the propeller.

With the the Becker Mewis Duct a solution has been developed which is combining all advantages in one device.

Rudder design optimization generates a better maneuverability, a reduction of drag and as a result more safety, less energy and less maintenance.

Three case studies for a 57k Bulk Carrier, a 50k Product / Chemical Tanker and a 318k VLCC are shown.

A technology to measure the rudder forces will also be shown.  Until today the only information we get from the rudder is the angle. To increase the safety aspects and the propulsion efficiency, a system to measure the rudder forces has been developed.
