DEVELOPMENTS IN RESEARCH AND OPTIMIZATION IN C.F.D. ON PATENTED HULL MONOTRICAT® HIGH HYDRODYNAMIC EFFICIENCY (FIRST NAVAL UNITS NAVIGATING ON FORMATION OF SPRAY SELF-PRODUCED)

Abstract


The patented hull Monotricat® , tested with Italian and foreign primary research university institutes, has the peculiarity of reducing the viscous resistance between the water and the bottom of the hull by capturing sprays associated with the wave formation engendered from the bow and conveyed below the hull. This allows to break the boundary layer over most of the surface of the hull, with the result of significantly reduce the frictional resistance, similar to the effect produced by pumping air under the hull in other types of boats. The experiments carried out so far has produced very good results always ameliorative, which are further refined with new simulations in C.F.D. conducted at the University of Stockholm in 2014, where, thanks to the modeling of turbulence, we got to get the scalability between tests in C.F.D. and previous results in Towing Tank, as a demonstration of the phenomena that occur under the hull and allow her to navigate by reducing the viscous resistance. Further studies in C.F.D. commissioned to an Italian company with HPC (High Performance Computing) have allowed us to make simulations in C.F.D. optimizing the hull. The studies conducted to date have shown that for the first time a naval hull while navigating in displacement, is able to reach speeds typical of planing boats, while the so-called resistance curve is actually represents as a straight line, obtaining a greater hydrodynamic efficiency compared to conventional hulls tending to 20%. It is expected that this will be confirmed in the towing tank tests provided in subsequently.
