Abstract

The Europe 2020 Strategy aims to achieve sustainable development, which includes the efficiency enhancing too. In line with the requirements, there is a continuous drive towards low energy, enviromentally friendly solutions, which can provide reduced carbon footprint. A group of innovative SMEs and reserch organizations formed an international cooperation in a R&D project to contributes to these aims by developing a waste heat recovery system to drive the compressor of icemaker of the fishing boats. RECOICE is an European project, designed to maximize the energy efficiency of fishing boats, throught use of a novel hat recovery system. The RECOICE concept is to use a Stirling engine to convert waste heat from diesel exhaust into electrical energy to drive the onboard icemaker. The system will enable significant fuel savings and improve the quality of the fish delivered, resulting in a better value product for the consumer. The project consisting of eight partners recieved funding from the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union to accomplish its aims between 2014 and 2016 (GA no 605286). The 24 months long project is coordinated by ATEKNEA Solutions Hungary Kft. with the involvment of 4 SMEs: Innovative Technological Systems Srl,MW- Innovation AB, Cooltech GMBH, Naval Architecture Progress, BVBA Verleene and 2 Research organizations: Ateknea Solutions Catalonia SA, TWI Limited.
