Wave Grouping Identification from Vessel Response
Last modified: 2015-05-26
Abstract
A real seaway is characterized by waves that tend to group such that a floating object has to withstand periods of significant forces to keep its position, with relatively calm intervals between sequences of high waves. A simple mathematical function is proposed to evaluate in real time the arrival of such a train of high waves from the measured wave frequency response onboard a vessel. The information on the incoming group of waves can be used as valuable information in a Dynamic Positioning algorithm (Wave Feed Forward) or for short operations like the crossing of the splash zone for a lifting.
