Abstract

This paper refer about the results of a series of tests designed to investigate the application possibilities of biocomposites for structural use in marine field.
Mechanical characterization tests has been previously conducted to investigate the behavior of some composite laminates obtained by combining flax reinforcements with different core materials and mainly with cork solutions.

The results obtained were compared with equivalent laminates obtained with conventional glass fiber reinforcements and were then used to build some prototypes of skiffs and to start a serial production of a small dinghy for children.
The aim of this study was therefore to make a contribution within the studies on the possiblities of applications of materials coming from renewable resources for the realization of fiber-reinforced composites in structural applications to transfer such materials in rationalized serial production processes.

The tests done have linked the results obtained with the transferability of these solutions in a production process by verifying the compatibility with the needs of the vacuum processing techniques too.

The results obtained through the launch of a serial production based on the use of biocomposites have provided a first positive response in terms of sustainability and feasibility both from technical and economical point of view.
