Abstract

The tragedy of the ship Concordia has deeply affected everyone, experts and designers, and people who have never set foot on a boat. The metaphor of the great ship sinking, touches everyone deeply, the analogy with Western civilization in crisis is immediate, as also is the reference to hubris, the arrogance of the man who defies the gods through technology. The ship bigger and bigger, more beautiful, more and more an object of desire, increasingly seen as a destination, rather than a means to travel, at the time of the wreck shows its fragility, in a paradoxical inversion of values??. A world upside down, which literally changes the geometry and references.
In recent years cruise ships have been enhanced with decorative elements, which have contributed to create environments rich in signs, very impressive, that enchant because they are similar to TV sets, where people feel wealthy and prominent. But, when the ship heels, furniture and furnishings become dangerous elements that overwhelm people, in which objects fly such as bullets.
The paper presents an hypothesis on how research in interior design, taking inspiration from other project contexts, can helps to contribute to passenger safety. Taking cues from the world of art installations and technologies of light, can lighten the interior fake decor, while maintaining the objectives of creating a fantasy world, dramatically different from that of all days. At the same time it is necessary to reconsider the options for the furniture, to their weight and being - or not - fixed to the floor.
The aim is to give a contribution to the reflection on interior design of cruise ships, pointing out how  research could find innovative ways in image and in safety.

Conference registration is required in order to view papers.
