Abstract

This paper presents an innovative concept design for a new type of catamaran particularly designed  to be operated in calm water and inland waterways as a pleasure craft.

This catamaran design  brings an innovative concept taken from industrial engineering applied to stock production.

The main characteristic of this multihull boat is the multifunctionality, because this solution can be easily applied to a large variety of solutions as, for instance, motor or sailing catamarans.

This allows to adopt this innovative solution for a wide range of final products each with own market and customers, taking into account the possibility of assembly/disassembly in a very short time various version of the basic boat.

Another aspect of relevant importance of these boats are their characteristic of “greenboat” being designed to allows the recycle/reuse of a large number of their components for different purposes.

In the paper other aspects of this design as product process, flexibility and costs will be discussed.

Finally it is important to underline that a prototype of this multifunctional catamaran was built and tested thanks the support of Cagliari Engineering University and Seawater, a local RIB Manufactures.
